Composition

Complex preparation containing as active substances milbemycin oxime and praziquantel and excipients. It is available as tablet for kittens and young cats with 4 mg of milbemycin oxime and 10 mg of praziquantel per tablet and as tablet for adult cats with 16 mg of milbemycin oxime and 40 mg of praziquantel per tablet.

Pharmacological action

Milbemitsina oxime and praziquantel exhibit synergistic action and in combination have a broad spectrum of action against larval and mature forms of nematodes and cestodes. Milbemicina oxime included in the drug belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones released as a result of enzymatic activity of Streptomyces hygroscopicus var. Aureolacrimosus. Milbemicina oxime is active against nematodes parasitizing in the gastrointestinal tract of cats, as well as nematode larvae Dirofilaria immitis. The mechanism of action of milbemicin is due to increased permeability of cell membranes for chlorine ions, which leads to overpolarization of membranes of nervous and muscular tissue cells, paralysis and death of the parasite. Maximum concentration of milbemycin oxime in blood plasma is reached after 2 hours. The compound is eliminated from the body mainly unchanged, the half-life is about 13 hours after oral administration of the drug. Praziquantel is an acylated derivative of pyrazine isoquinoline and has a pronounced effect against cestodes and nematodes. Increasing permeability of cell membranes of the parasite for calcium ions, causes depolarization of membranes, contraction of muscles and destruction of tegument, which leads to death of the parasite and promotes its elimination from the animal body. Maximum concentration of praziquantel in blood plasma is reached after 1 hour. The compound is eliminated from the body mainly in the form of inactive metabolites with urine, the elimination half-life is about 3 hours after oral administration of the drug. Milbemax belongs to the group of compounds moderately dangerous for warm-blooded animals; in recommended doses it has no sensitizing, embryotoxic and teratogenic effects. It is well tolerated by cats of different breeds and ages. The drug is toxic to fish and other hydrobionts.
