Betadine is an antiseptic and disinfectant. Released from the complex with polyvinylpyrrolidone upon contact with the skin and mucous membranes, iodine forms iodamines with bacterial cells, coagulates them and causes the death of microorganisms. It has a bactericidal effect on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (with the exception of Mycobacterium tuberculosis).
Active against bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa.

Indications

  - treatment of the patient’s skin before and after surgical interventions (including injection, puncture, biopsy, blood sampling);
  - treatment of wounds, burns, trophic ulcers, pressure sores, superinfective dermatitis;
  - hygienic treatment of patients;
  - genital herpes.

Contraindications

  - hyperthyroidism;
  - thyroid adenoma;
  - Herpetiform dermatitis of Dühring;
  - simultaneous use of radioactive iodine;
  - children's age up to 8 years;
  - Hypersensitivity to iodine and other components of the drug.
With caution , the drug should be used during pregnancy and during lactation (breastfeeding)

Contraindicated in premature and newborn infants.

The use of the drug in newborns is possible only in case of emergency, after examining the function of the thyroid gland. 

Pregnancy and lactation

Structure

1 g of ointment contains:

Active substance: 100 mg of povidone iodine;

Excipients: sodium bicarbonate, macrogol 400, macrogol 4000, macrogol 1000, purified water

Dosage and administration

The ointment is applied in a thin layer to the affected areas several times a day.

Side effects

Perhaps: a local manifestation of an allergic reaction to iodine (itching, hyperemia), which requires the withdrawal of the drug.

Drug interaction

Incompatible with other antiseptic agents, especially those containing alkalis, enzymes and mercury.

In the presence of blood, the bactericidal effect may decrease, but with an increase in the concentration of the drug, the bactericidal activity may be increased.

Overdose

Ointment should be stored at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C and relative humidity not more than 75%.
