Dosage and administration
The drug is mainly administered intramuscularly. In treatment of viral infections of dogs the single dose of Phosprenyl is 0.1 ml per 1 kg of body weight. In the treatment of viral infections of cats a single therapeutic dose of Phosprenyl is 0.2 ml per 1 kg of body weight. In severe and moderate clinical forms of viral infections single therapeutic dose of Phosprenyl shall be doubled: in dogs - 0.2 ml per 1 kg body weight; in cats - 0.4 ml per 1 kg body weight. It is possible to use the drug orally in dogs and cats, in this case a single dose increased by 2 times in relation to intramuscular dose should be used. In treatment of viral diseases of calves single intramuscular dose is 0.1 ml per 1 kg of body weight. In treatment of viral enteritis sucking piglets weighing 3 to 5 kg are administered 0.5 ml of Phosprenyl intramuscularly during 8 days. Treatment regimen depends on the type of disease. The universal course in severe forms of plague in dogs, panleukopenia and infectious peritonitis in cats consists of 40 doses: from day 1 to day 2 - 4 doses per day (every 6 hours), from day 3 to day 10 - 3 doses per day (every 8 hours), from day 11 to day 13 - 2 doses per day (every 12 hours), day 14 and 15 - 1 dose per day. In moderate forms of plague in dogs, panleukopenia and infectious peritonitis in cats as well as in parvovirus enteritis and hepatitis in dogs the following scheme of treatment is applied: in day 1 - 4 doses daily (every 6 hours), from day 2 to day 8 - 3 doses daily (every 8 hours), from day 9 to day 11 - 2 doses daily (every 12 hours), from day 12 to day 15 - 1 dose daily. In mild course of the same viral infections and in case of adenoviruses in dogs and viral rhinotracheitis in cats the basic scheme of treatment remains the same, but the total duration of treatment is reduced to 3 to 7 days: on day 1 (or the first 2 - 3 days) - 3 doses per day (every 8 hours), on day 2 (or on days 3 - 5) - 2 doses per day (every 12 hours), on day 3 (or on days 5 - 7) - 1 dose per day. In the mild course of plague of carnivores (initial stage), the total duration of treatment shall be not less than 2 weeks. In treatment of viral diseases in calves the following scheme is applied: 1st day - 4 injections per day (every 6 hours), 2nd to 4th day - 3 injections per day (every 8 hours), on 5th day - 2 injections per day (every 12 hours). If necessary, the treatment course may be prolonged up to 7 days by administering a single dose of the drug twice a day. The following scheme of treatment is used in treatment of viral enteritis in piglets: 1st day - 4 injections per day (every 6 hours), 2nd to 4th day - 3 injections per day (every 8 hours), 5th to 7th day - 2 injections per day (every 12 hours), 8th day - 1 injection per day. The therapeutic regimen may be adjusted depending on the severity of the disease and peculiarities of individual body sensitivity. If necessary, repeated courses of treatment may be prescribed. In severe and moderate clinical forms of viral infections it is necessary to use fosprrenil in combination with antibiotics, antihistamines and symptomatic therapy aimed at correction of water-salt and acid-base balance, body detoxification, normalization of body temperature and maintenance of vital organs. Additional use of immunomodulatory drugs is not required. Combination with interferon drugs and interferon inducers increases the effectiveness of the treatment. Treatment shall be discontinued after 2 - 3 days after normalization of general condition, disappearance of basic clinical symptoms of the disease. For preventive purposes (under the threat of infectious diseases after contact with sick animals, before visiting exhibitions, before long trips), the drug is used once in a single therapeutic dose.
